How to Choose iGaming Google Ads Keywords

A thousand casino keywords are easy to collect. A short list that brings the right searcher to the right page is harder, and usually a better place to begin.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose iGaming Google Ads keywords by customer intent, product fit and measurable acquisition value. Separate brand from nonbrand terms, group related intentions around a suitable landing page, and use negative keywords to remove searches your offer cannot satisfy. Treat the initial list as a hypothesis that actual search-term data will improve.

What to take away

  • A keyword belongs in the plan only when you can name its destination and intended outcome.
  • Match types control reach but do not replace search-term review.
  • Negative keywords need a reason, a scope and checks for useful searches they could block.

1. Build an intent map before using a keyword tool

Start with what the operator actually offers: casino, live casino, sportsbook or another eligible product. List the visitor questions each destination answers. A casino overview may answer what games are available; an offer page explains a specific promotion; a support page helps existing customers. These are different search intentions even when all contain the brand name.

Use only the products and markets the advertiser is eligible to promote under Google's current gambling requirements. Within that boundary, decide which intentions belong in paid acquisition. Support, employment and informational searches may be valuable to the business without belonging in a new-customer campaign. The keyword plan should reflect the campaign's job.

2. Research the selected market, not a global average

Use Google's Keyword Planner to explore the product terms and the relevant website pages. Set the location, language and network to match the proposed campaign. Review related ideas and seasonality, then retain only phrases that fit a useful group. Search volume is a demand clue, not evidence that a visitor will become a customer.

Build a worksheet with keyword, intent, destination, match type and priority. Add a brief reason for every high-priority term: strong product fit, meaningful historical outcomes or a specific unanswered commercial question. Leave forecast numbers visibly labeled as estimates. A low-volume term with a relevant page can deserve a test; a high-volume term with no coherent destination can wait.

3. Separate brand and nonbrand before comparing costs

Put your own brand terms into a clearly identified group or campaign. Separate them from generic product searches in reporting even when the initial budget is small. Someone looking for your operator already knows something about it; someone searching for a category may still be comparing products. Their costs and conversion rates answer different questions.

Within brand traffic, distinguish discovery from customer service. Do not automatically exclude every query containing login: inspect the intended campaign and actual journey first. Equally, do not count all inexpensive brand registrations as proof that generic acquisition works. Review brand and nonbrand cost per completed outcome independently before changing allocation between them.

4. Use match types to control the question being tested

Google exact match uses square brackets and can match the same meaning or intent. Phrase match uses quotation marks and reaches searches that include the keyword's meaning. Broad match can reach related searches beyond that meaning. These are semantic matching systems, so a tidy keyword spreadsheet will not describe every query that can trigger an ad.

For an initial diagnostic test, a compact exact and phrase structure can make query review manageable. Consider broad match as a deliberate expansion with reliable conversion signals and Smart Bidding, which Google recommends for broad match. Do not add every spelling in every match type merely to make the account look complete. Expand when the expected information is worth the extra reach.

5. Build negative keywords around unwanted intent

Create a small starting exclusion list from obvious mismatches. If the campaign recruits players, job applications, dealer training and casino equipment shopping are different intentions. If the product has no hotel or physical venue, those searches deserve scrutiny. Review the complete query before excluding a short word that might also appear in valuable searches.

Negative matching differs from positive matching. A negative broad term blocks searches containing all its terms; negative phrase depends on their order; negative exact blocks the complete specified query without extra words. Negative keywords do not expand to synonyms or singular and plural variants. Choose the narrowest useful exclusion and check for conflicts with intended keywords.

  • Account scope: reserve for intentions genuinely irrelevant to every applicable campaign.
  • Campaign scope: exclude themes outside that campaign's acquisition job.
  • Ad-group scope: use when a specific group cannot satisfy the query and the broader account still can.
  • Change log: record the excluded query, chosen match type and commercial reason.

6. Review search terms with outcomes, not clicks alone

At each review, classify the available search terms into keep, investigate and exclude. Keep relevant searches with a coherent customer journey. Investigate terms that look relevant but produce weak outcomes or insufficient evidence. Exclude clear mismatches. Google's search terms report does not reveal every individual search, so avoid claiming that the visible rows account for every click.

A query with spend and no registrations may have a weak destination rather than weak intent. Check that page and the time allowed for conversions before adding a negative. If several queries repeatedly ask for the same real product, improve their shared ad group and page. Keep the keyword worksheet concise enough that another buyer can understand the next decision without rebuilding your analysis.

Quick questions

What are the best keywords for online casino ads?

The best candidates fit the operator's available product, eligible market and destination. Start with your own brand and relevant product intentions, then judge them using completed outcomes. A universal list ignores local demand and customer economics.

Should free be a negative keyword for casino campaigns?

Only when it describes an unwanted intention for the specific campaign. A blanket exclusion can block queries related to a genuine eligible offer. Review complete searches and offer wording before applying it broadly.

How often should we add negative keywords?

Review frequently enough to catch meaningful irrelevant spend, with closer attention after a launch or expansion. Add exclusions for a clear reason; a daily routine does not require a daily change.
